The blend of sad girl pop and industrial is actually balanced extremely well which to be honest I didn't expect in the slightest. Though at times does come off as a little bit over the top ,dipping its toes into the Cherry Bomb pool with its meme worthy bass. If that doesn't bother you though this album is really solid.
BLOOM, and especially closer MY HEART BEATS OUT OF TIME, speak to the idea that their damaging experiences at least brought them to a place where they found each other. The album ends on a suspenseful note, wondering if life will resume after another brush with death, but it's clear that love and affection is what even allows the question to exist. LOVE AND AFFECTION is primarily a rumination on the group's continued struggles with trauma and pain, problems that can't be easily solved by the emotional outpourings of their prior work or a larger amount of recognition. MINDCRUSHED continues this theme of ceaseless torment, self-consciously noting at one point how tiresome this form of existence is with "suffering/mindcrushed/no release/bla bla bla/it goes on." On February 14, 2021, the duo released their fifth studio album, Forever in Your Heart, announcing it 30 minutes prior to its release.

It’s a truly challenging and at times horrifying listening experience, which sees itself being defined by the opening track STATIC, an electro-noise extravaganza that is everything but pleasant to the ear. The duo announced via Twitter on May 26, 2020, that Black Dresses would be disbanding, citing the harassment received by McCallion as the reason. The band's music was also temporarily taken off streaming services. On 10 July 2020, after the duo disbanded, a remix of 100 Gecs song, "745 Sticky", was released on the remix album 1000 Gecs and the Tree of Clues. On 21 December 2020, the duo released a single with ESPer99 titled "World Peace", recorded in 2019. McCallion and Rook also released solo music under the names Girls Rituals and Ada Rook respectively.
In August 2021, Black Dresses' music returned to streaming services. In December 2021, Black Dresses appeared on the holiday compilation album Christmasasaurus X2 with their version of the song "We Are Children of the Light" by Eugene O'Reilley. It's difficult for me to pick my favorite album from the girls, but for the longest time, it was Peaceful as Hell. I guess what shifted my gaze to this album over that one was the fact that this is just so consistent. The five-track run from 'STATIC' to 'CARTOON NETWORK' is absolutely insane. The tracks here range from super sweet, to absolutely devastating. Take the glossy instrumentals of Thank You and mix it with the heavy emotional subject matter of Forever in Your Heart to get probably the best five songs I've ever heard in a row.
